BeeBee's Story: Rachael Bee Artwork was founded from an experience I had with a small female carpenter bee that changed how I saw everything. It was early fall in 2019 when I discovered this carpenter bee barely moving on the cement floor of my carport. After quickly doing some research, I had discovered the bee was most-likely dehydrated and in need of energy from the nectar flowers provide. I clipped some lavender stems from my garden and hand fed this small bee, who I decided to name BeeBee Baggins. After about 45 minutes of monitoring BeeBee and continuing to provide lavender stems, the small carpenter bee was reenergized and able to continue on her foraging mission.
After that day, it became my objective to use my artwork to help advocate for insects, wildlife and all the creatures I came across while living out in the country. Beebee was the first portrait I painted when I started this mission and the Eastern carpenter bee also became my logo for my art business. This particular bee species gets a lot of distaste from many people because the females create small circular holes in wood to nest in. Although it is unlikely they will do enough damage to harm anything, many people put out carpenter bee traps to kill them. Carpenter bees are excellent pollinators (just like the more well-loved honey bee) and are actually a native bee species to America. They have very energetic personalities and are extraordinarily personable, especially the stingless males who enjoy hovering inches from your face to say hello!
