This painting of a fallen maple leaf is titled “Leave the Leaves” for a very important reason! You may have heard conservationists tell you to “leave the leaves” as they fall to the ground in the fall, but do you know why that is so important?
Leaving your leaf litter provides excellent nutrients for the soil (which in turn helps your gardens thrive) as well as providing nesting spaces for insects and wildlife over winter. Turtles, toads, songbirds, mammals, and more rely on this litter for shelter and food. Moth and butterfly caterpillars often overwinter in these fallen leaves before emerging in the springtime. There are so many benefits of just letting nature be! I encourage you next autumn to hang up the leaf blower and rake and leave the leaves.
